Father Peter Junichi Iwahashi
Peter Junichi Iwahashi was born in Nagasaki, Japan in 1940. He is the oldest
of three children. He and his younger sister and brother were each born one year
apart. His father passed away when Peter was six years old and the family moved
to Tokyo. His mother worked very hard caring for the family.
Peter graduated from Aoyama Public High School and fulfilled his desire to study
for the priesthood. In 1964, he graduated from Sophia University majoring in
Philosophy and he finished his Masters Degree in 1966. He was ordained as a
priest in 1968.
His first assignment in 1969 was Assistant Pastor of Senzoku Parish in Tokyo.
From 1970 through 2001, he served as the pastor of various parishes in Tokyo
including Sekimachi Parish (where he met Mr. Nishidate in 1973). He served as
the Secretary of the Japanese Catholic Bishops Conference from 1984 through
1994 and he served as the pastor of Tokyo Cathedral from 2001 through 2005.
Father Peter arrived here in Los Angeles in April, and he will be with us for one
year. Thank you Father Peter, for choosing to stay and help us enrich our spiritual
lives.
